GM Bio

Rick Brenner, General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, Trenton Thunder

What was your first baseball job? What other jobs did you have before becoming a GM?

I started out as a Public Relations intern. Later, I moved on to be Director of Community Relations, Director of Special Events, Director of Public Relations and Director of Operations. From there, I became Assistant General Manager and now, General Manager /COO.

Who were your mentors and what was the most valuable thing they taught you?

I learned from people that worked here and from our ownership. Some of the most valuable things I have learned are to always ask questions, work hard and never ask anyone to do something that you would not do yourself. It is also important to have your eyes and ears open to staff, interns, fans, everyone. Visit other parks; look at what every team is doing and extract any ideas that you can in order to make your park run better and be more entertaining.

What has been your fondest baseball memory?

We are all fortunate to work in this industry and have the opportunity to entertain fans and to enjoy the game and the fun that surrounds it. There are too many great moments to pick just one. I will say, however, that the moment I arrive at the park every day gets a little more exciting every time. We are lucky to be part of this industry, and I have not had a day in 10 years that I was not looking forward to coming to the ballpark.

What are your feelings on the Eastern League?

The Eastern League has some phenomenal cities and stadiums. It is a great league for prospects and entertainment and, in addition, is extremely affordable.

What do you look for when adding staff members?

The most important thing in finding the right people for our staff is to find ones that are comfortable with people. I know it sounds corny, but we believe that hiring "people"- persons and training them to do their jobs is more important than anything else. This is a customer service industry and we need outgoing, friendly people to treat our fans in the manner they deserve. We typically promote from within (of our 20 full-time staff, 15 started here as interns). Our intern program is used as a feeder system because it gives us the opportunity to see who we feel has the potential to move up to the next level in their careers.

GM Q&A

Dan Mason, General Manager, Rochester Red Wings

What does a General Manager do?  What are you responsible for?

My job is to oversee the business side of our operation. This includes the Ticket Sales, Season Seats, Group Sales, Marketing, Community Relations, Public/Media Relations, Website, Promotions, Radio Broadcast, Merchandising, Accounting, Human Resources and Grounds Maintenance departments. We have department heads for each of these categories with whom I work to make sure all issues are managed. Unlike a Major League GM, I have nothing to do with player moves, signing player contracts, hiring our manager, coaches or trainers. Anything to do with our team on the field is handled by our parent club, the Minnesota Twins.

The thing I enjoy most about Minor League Baseball is that your title doesn't really describe all you do. Everyone in the organization does whatever is necessary to get things done. If it rains, everyone pulls the tarp, whether you are the GM or the lowest man on the totem pole in the grounds crew. If we get an order of 3,000 baseballs that we are giving away, we all unload the truck. Nearly everybody sells tickets and advertising. If you want to work in Minor League Baseball, you can't be afraid to sell because it is the most important thing that you'll be asked to do.

As GM, my job, essentially, is to make sure everyone is happy- the fans, the media, our employees, our Board of Directors, the players, coaches, manager and our parent club.

Explain how your team is related to its league, the NA and MLB.

The Red Wings are members of the 14 team International League, which is one of two leagues in the Triple A classification. It is an honor to be in the International League, as we have some of the most storied and successful franchises in Minor League Baseball. The league itself has existed since 1884.

How is your team structured and how do your different departments work together to achieve a common goal?

About three weeks after the end of the season our entire full-time staff (about 20 people) meets for two days at an off-site location. We discuss what went well and what went wrong during the previous season and what we can do differently in the upcoming season. Each department head makes a presentation about his/her area of expertise. This allows other staff members to make suggestions for improvements. We basically have a two-day brainstorming session.

We have department heads for Group Sales, Ticket Sales, PR, Promotions, Website, Marketing and Sales. All of those people sell advertising in the off-season, as well as tickets. In the off-season, the seven or eight people who sell advertising have weekly meetings to discuss upcoming meetings with clients, deals that were closed the previous week and inventory that is available. Our Group Sales department also has weekly meetings in the off-season in which they do the same. In our conference room at the office, we have a large dry-erase board which lists every game of the season, the opponent and game time. It also lists the corresponding promotion, sponsor, media sponsor(s) and group promotion.

During the season, our entire staff meets about three weeks prior to each homestand to discuss every facet of the upcoming games.

Describe the favorite part of your job.

My favorite part of the job is being here for each of our 72 games. Those events represent the culmination of all our year-long efforts. The sales, promotions, customer service, grounds, PR, merchandise, website all come together for those 3-4 hour events. Like every job, there are good days and bad days, but the good days certainly outweigh the bad ones. When the bad days occur, I try to remind myself that somebody actually pays me to work at a ballpark for a baseball team. I am very lucky to have that opportunity.

People come to our ballparks to have fun and forget about their problems at home or at work, and it is rewarding to know that we are providing memories to our fans that will last a lifetime. At the end of every game our staff stands at the gates and thanks people for coming. We can always tell if we have done our job if the fans leave with a smile, whether the team wins or loses.

For you, what are the pros and cons about working in Minor League Baseball?

The people I work with and the relationships I have developed over the years the biggest pros. As a staff, we put in 80-90 hour weeks and the people I work with have become not only great employees but some of my closest friends. The same goes for many of my clients. While I may have met them originally because of a sales call, I've developed great friendships with many of my sponsors. Many I would consider being a friend first and a sponsor second.  It's always more fun when you are dealing with people you like, and I know I would never have met some of these great people were it not for my job.

It is also a lot of fun to see young men go from playing here in a Red Wings uniform to a hitting a homerun for the big league club or making a diving catch on SportsCenter. It's nice to get to know some of these guys before they become Major League stars.

One of the few drawbacks to the job is that your personal/family life is often sacrificed due to the long hours. I have a wife and two young kids, and during the summer I don't get to spend much time with them. I miss some holidays and family gatherings, but thankfully for me, they are all extremely understanding. They realize there is no other job I would rather have than working in baseball. I'm hopeful that in the future my job will be able to afford my family some opportunities that others wouldn't have. For instance, I hope that someday my kids will have a chance to work with me here while they are in high school or college. That way, I would get to spend more time with them during those years. Plus, my kids can run the bases whenever they want, which makes me a hero!
